Victoria Falls

Zimbabwe

Just across the border from Livingstone in Zambia and near to Botswana in western Zimbabwe lies the charming town of Victoria Falls. As the name suggests, this little town is positioned directly next to the iconic Victoria Falls and from many parts of the town you can hear the thundering of the Falls in the distance and see the spray rising above the bridge.

While the Falls are, of course, the area’s major attraction, the town offers both adventure seekers and sightseers plenty of reasons to indulge in a longer stay. Adrenaline junkies can go white water rafting, bungee jumping and gorge swinging, while canoeing and helicopter flights are more relaxing options. For those interested in experiencing a wildlife safari, the town is also surrounded by the Zambezi  National Park, in which many of the area’s lodges are located.

The settlement began in 1901 when the possibility of using the waterfall for hydro-electric power was explored. It then expanded when the railway from Bulawayo reached the town shortly before the Victoria Falls Bridge was opened in April 1905, connecting Zimbabwe to what is now Zambia.

The town offers a wide variety of accommodation, such as the world-famous Victoria Falls Hotel that is steeped in history and well worth a visit even if you aren't staying there. They serve a superb high tea on the terrace overlooking the Victoria Falls Bridge. Whether you prefer a hotel environment or a smaller, more personal lodge there is range of high-standard properties to choose from.

The Victoria Falls Airport is located 18km south of the main town and offers international services to Johannesburg and Cape Town (South Africa), Windhoek (Namibia) and Addis Ababa (Ethiopia). Victoria Falls town is easily accessed via cross-border road transfer from Livingstone (Zambia) and Kasane (Botswana).
